Groups of heron by the pond of lotus are repeated across the length of this Batik Pekalongan. eron and lotus set against the bright yellow of dusk just before the sun sets, as defined in Chinese mythology, symbolize the sentiment of progress, wishing that may one follow a path of continuing success. This is further emphasized by the change of colour of the biggest heron at each set from the darkest on the left to the lightest on the right. This color gradation shows the technique and details from a batik maker of the highest caliber.
This is a Taman Terate (Lotus Garden) motif is an example of Batik Pekalongan, one of the coastal batik (batik pesisir) known for the colorful and thematic design. This theme is introduced into Indonesian batik fashion in the 1900s through European magazines when Japanese art was in vogue in Europe.
