In Japanese philosophy, cranes bring good fortune and longevity. The star symbolizes a constellation that influences one’s fortune and personality. This piece embodies the mother figure who sacrifices and strives for the welfare of their children with hopes that they grow to be better individuals. The cranes and constellation of stars representing her hopes and prayers respectively.
Curator's Note
The artist represents hope as the constellation of four-pointed stars instead of five points. Other than the symmetry and design flow, the artist shared that there is no absolute definition that a star must have five points. Similarly, there is no single definition of what is, isn’t, should or shouldn’t a woman be.
Commissioned for the exhibition, this artwork by Ratih was inspired by her own mother. All females have motherly intuition that they wants the best for the kids, despite of being unachievable like the stars. They often disregard their own wellbeing to give the best environment for their children to grow up. The constellation of stars represent those hopes and prayers of mothers.
Hope is also represented by the Japanese cranes, as both real life figures and the origami ornaments. As legends have it, when 1000 pieces of origami cranes are hang by the window, it represents hope and dream coming true.
The artist uses classic colours of batik pedalaman (inland batik) – brown, black and white. Unlike the centre subjects in the other commissioned works for the exhibition, here, the artist keeps it brown and white against the black background as she wants to show that beauty need not be represented by bright colours. It is a monochrome piece that brings out the beauty of strength.
