Bunga Kusumawijaya (Epiphyllum anguliger) is a mysterious flower that blooms fully around midnight and fade away by the next morning. It shows its best moment when nobody is watching. From this flower, which people seldom see at their best glorious state, there is a wisdom from the nature to be learned.
Commissioned as part of aNERDgallery’s exhibition inVISIBLE: Exploring and Redefining Femininity Through Batik, Tjiplies picked this flower as her subject which represents the theme of “Fragility and Strength”. Like the flower, females reveal their strength, shine and rise to glory when nobody is expecting.
The artist applied alternating layers of wax and silk paints with brushes onto the blank manually-loomed silk to create sophisticated gradients to give the works layers and depth. After multiple cycles of waxing and painting, wax removal was done using a steaming iron to prevent damage to the cloth and to give the precision that cannot be obtained with the regular technique of boiling textile in water. Finally, the work was steamed with very low heat for over 6 hours to fix the dye to the cloth.
This art piece is paired with an elegant hanging rod, ready to be hung as a centrepiece in the living room or study room.
