Jungle Fowl: Modern Kain Panjang with a Classic Batik Yogyakarta Motif

This is a bold and fiery red kain panjang, featuring red jungle fowl motif (motif ayam hutan). This motif is one of the batik pedalaman motif. Jungle fowl is similar to chicken but is bigger in size and has long and colourful feathers. The fowls are able to survive the harsh and wild environment. Hence, this motif represents strength and beauty in adversity. Also, red jungle fowl is believed to be the origins of all the other fowl species, a symbol for the front runner, the leader.

For this artwork, all the outlines and the details are hand-drawn by applying the wax with a canting. The dots and tiny flowers background are painstakingly added throughout the cloth. After the wax work, the cloth is first dipped into the orange dye vat. The desired orange images are then covered with wax, before dipping into the final red dye and wax removal.
