The Story of a Kain
Commissioned as part of aNERDgallery’s exhibition inVISIBLE: Exploring and Redefining Femininity Through Batik, Ratih was inspired by taro leaves that she saw when travelling to Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. The artwork that represents the theme of “Fragility and Strength” symbolised by the tender leaves yet it is nutritious, just like the women who are the healers in the family. Each leaves has their own colour and pattern to represent that women are not one-sided but diverse and multi-faceted.
After waxing the outline and the fine details using a canting, each leaves are dyed using a colet (brushing) method. The are then covered with wax to preserve the colours before doing a celup (dipping) into the blue background colour. Finally, the cloth are boiled in soda ash solution to remove the wax. This work with all the intricate details took about six months to complete.
