In this contemporary Tuban Batik piece, the artist is inspired by the simplest thing in life, citrus, expressing the enthusiastic zest of life. The cross section of the limes arranged neatly across the shawl. The weaved cloth was first colored in soft earth brown, followed by the batik process of applying the wax by hand to produce the lime prints before dipping into the blue vat, giving the bluish green seeds. This process is repeated by covering the lime prints with wax and dye-dipping to give the exquisite deep blue background.
Tuban Batik is one of a kind batik in Indonesia. Tuban is one of the last remaining places in Indonesia where they weave and batik their own cloth. The cloth texture is thicker than the usual batik from a primissima cotton. Despite of all the tradition around Batik Tuban, this workshop from Tuban is marrying the traditional art of batik with modern design.
The light tinge of green seeds against the beige exterior and blue background give an earthy tone suitable for modern spaces, suitable for a table runner or a hanging ornament. The monotone background gives the flexibility to be combined with an existing art piece or against any surfaces and colours. Of course, this batik can be used as a shawl draped over the shoulder, paired with bright clothing.
