Women constantly adapt to every situation – good or bad – and maintain the life of duality with efficiency and strength. The lush vegetation and dry barren forests being placed side by side is a direct interpretation of the endless cycles of duality. Nonetheless, when everything looks dry and bleak, keep smiling and be inspiring.
Two Seasons is Tjiplies’ commissioned work for the inVISIBLE exhibition corresponding to the theme “Living between Worlds”. The artist picked the juxtaposition of the two seasons of a tropical forest scenery to present the constantly changing duality. Often overlooked is the small bush in the dry barren forest representing that light at the end of the tunnel. It represents hope, aspiration, a new beginning.
Like any other batik painting, the artist has to work backwards (i.e. starting with putting wax on parts that do NOT want to be coloured while slowly adding and building the colours).Tjiplies’ keen eyes for details allows her to create this work with a sense of layers and depth.
After numerous cycles of waxing and painting with silk paint, wax removal was carefully done with a steaming iron to prevent damage to the cloth and to give the precision that cannot be obtained with the regular technique of using boiling water. Finally, the work was steamed with very low heat for over 6 hours to fix the dye to the cloth.
This art piece is paired with an elegant hanging rod, ready to be hung as a centrepiece in the living or study room.
