Ratih Artika Dewanti is a batik artist from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. She started her journey as a textile artist/designer since her university days in 2004. Ratih has been honing her skill working on cloth with Indonesian motifs and traditional craft techniques, specifically batik and jumputan (tie-dye or shibori). She enjoys experimenting marrying traditional methods with novel, contemporary ideas. This is evident in her batik design and commissioned works under her brand Artdewamoda.
Ratih is aspired to spread messages through batik to the wider international audience, especially to the next generation. Ratih holds a position as an art teacher at a local high school. Besides, Ratih opens an arts studio cum library named “Sanggar Nirmana”. These avenues allow her to conducts public and community arts workshops for adults and children as to impart her wealth of knowledge and passion for Indonesian textile.
Ratih is an active key founding members of Kompor Seni. It is a Yogyakarta-based arts community established as a platform to nurture their members’ potentials in the creative economy sectors. Since the inception in 2016, they have been a partner and a collaborator of Indonesia’s prestigious art events. These include Festival Kesenian Yogyakarta (Yogyakarta Arts Festival), Nandur Srawung Show and Clay Con event, among many others. In June 2017, Ratih conducted a batik workshops for adults and children in Singapore as part of a collaboration between aNERDgallery and Kompor Seni.
Ratih graduated from Faculty of Fine Arts, Indonesian Arts Institute Yogyakarta, majoring in Applied Arts (Textile) in 2009. Ratih also completed Development Program for Educators from Ahmad Dahlan University, Yogyakarta, in 2012. In 2017, Ratih became a qualified accessor of batik practitioners competencies for Central Java region.
