Risk Talk (2019)

Risk Talk (2019) is an art installation depicting the perception of “risk” across two centuries.

This sculpture is a collaboration among The Lloyd’s Register Foundation Institute for the Public Understanding of Risk (IPUR) at the National University of Singapore Data Team, IPUR’s Artist-in Residence Dr Pablo Suarez and aNERDgallery’s artists and production team.

The Data team, led by Lead Scientist for Data & Technology Assistant Professor Reuben Ng, curated and analysed digitised newspaper, magazines and publications from 1810s to identify terms that occurred near the word “risk”. Together with Dr. Pablo Suarez, we analysed, conceptualised, calculated and designed “Risk Talk” to reflect the changing perception of risk throughout the risk through categorisation and colour differentiation. The artists (Ratih Artika Dewanti, Anto Sukanto, Andika Industriyana) then produced the batik art, combining modern iconography and traditional batik motifs to reflect the different ideas and categories. The structure is also build to invite participants to immerse themselves among the colours of data, to examine, to reflect and to initiate conversation on our changing understanding of risk.

Risk Talk is a demonstration of how batik art, scientific thinking and data visualisation could be presented together to invoke discussion of what matters.
